What a weekend!!! Kingscliff played host to 15 very fit, highly competitive and motivated athletes. But staying just down the road was the Tour of Hope Triathlon crew who raced with the perfect balance of fun and competitive spirit, typified by Mikka Manson’s choice of swim wear (see photo of cut body in yellow buggy smugglers…). We had a great weekend together with family and friends coming along to enjoy watching loved ones put themselves through; for some, a lot of pain, and for other, just a bit of pain.

Needless to say, those watching enjoyed it (a little sadistic…) and those competing enjoyed finishing. As we all stood on the start line of the swim our tried and tested legend of the sport Ian Thompson gave us some words of wisdom, “Crew I checked my Iphone earlier and the tied changed at 7am so the later we get in the water the quicker the tied will be running”. That gave as all a glimmer of hope, and he was right, the swim was fast and dare I say it; enjoyable… It was then on to the 40km bike leg which was made up of a 4 lap out and back course which made for alot of down wind runs, but equaled by the amount of head wind runs as well (I guess you can’t have everything…).

As the Individual athletes and the team athletes were only separated by 5 minutes on the start line it meant everyone was on similar laps and it was great to see someone wearing a Tour of Hope jersey every few minutes as we passed by each other on the lapped course. By half way through the bike leg the wind had started to pick up, making for very difficult head wind conditions, but not to be defeated the Team riders and individual athletes pushed on to record some very quick bike times -Tour of Hope must have a good Cycling coach By the time the run leg started it must have been at least 60 degrees HOT!!! Well perhaps I have let my imagination stretch the truth alittle, but rest assured it was hot. Still, we all survived and Mark Page even recorded a very good 42 minute 10km run. The highlight on the run course (other than crossing the finishing line…) was hearing the finish line announcer call out, “hear comes another Tour of Hope athlete crossing the line”. I think our uniforms stood out and drew attention to The Tour of Hope, which ultimately helps support the orphaned children in Africa. Make sure you take your time in checking out the finishing positions of all our athletes (table below) especially those with either a 1st, 2nd or 3rd beside their name – what an effort!

I would like to say thank you to all the competitors and the families and friends that came along to support. It made for a very social, fun and challenging weekend that we all got to share in. Please enjoy some photos taken by Jo Mills.

This Week’s Ride
We will do a very social River Loop this Saturday. Meet at The Nook Coffee shop at 6am. Those that want to ride quick can do so but those that are wanting more of a social fun ride can do that too. Those that can are welcome to stay on for a coffee at The Nook after the ride. It is about a 50km loop from The Nook so we should be finished by 8am.

See below for next weeks session details. Training times for THIS weeks session are as per normal – please note however, that Wednesday morning power session has moved to Rocks Riverside Park and begins at 5.45am until 7am. As of next week sessions and venue starting locations will change so please check the attachment so you don’t turn up to the wrong location. Once the Enews moves permanently to the website I will put up a month long program for everyone to attend. No session will be coached, it will be more a case of whoever turns up trains under the set program.

Bribie Island Triathlon was held on Sunday 12th of Feb and for me two exceptional things happened at that event. Firstly; The Thompson clan entered a team that spanned 3 generations with Russel (Grandfather) Swimming, Ian (Dad) doing the Cycle, and Michael (Son) the Run. After Russel successfully negotiated the Stingers in the water, Ian survived his long time knee injury and a flat Tyre on the bike, it was up to Michael to bring home the Thompson team, and he did in his usual confident style. Great job Team Thomo’s!!! Secondly; Jason Brown competed in the individual event which consisted of a 1km swim, 30km ride and an 8km run. Jas also had to fight off the Stingers in the swim but that wasn’t the only thing that slowed him down… When Jason finished a very good Cycle leg he put his shoes on to head out on the run when he spotted a work colleague also heading out on the run. After a quick hello Jason soon realized that the guy was in trouble with bad leg cramps so Jason sacrificed his own time to stop and help this guy stretch out his leg cramps so that he could finish the race. To me, this is what Team Tour of Hope is all about; we’re a Triathlon squad with a difference… We care more about people than racing! Jason that was a real highlight to hear and congratulations, not only for racing well, but for being Jesus in a Triathlon Suit…

What’s for dinner tonight!

Here are a few quick tips;

Good training and a good diet = good performance.

Athletes will gain most from the amount of carbohydrates ’stored’ in their body.

Fat also provides body fuel; use of fat as fuel depends on the duration of the exercise and the condition of the athlete.

Exercise may increase the athlete’s need for protein.

Water is a critical nutrient for athletes. Dehydration can cause muscle cramping and fatigue.

(Colorado state university; Extension – Nutrition for an Athlete)

Carbohydrates stored in the body is the best value for money in energy production during endurance events. Carbohydrates generates more energy per unit of oxygen consumed than fats and seeing as though oxygen comes in short supply during endurance events we want to maximize energy production without wasting too much oxygen. It is wise to build up the body stores of Glycogen (body breaks down carbohydrates to glucose and stores it in the muscles as Glycogen) in the weeks leading into a race. Slow build up of Glycogen is recommended over a rapid build up or “carbo loading”. Long distance athletes should have 70% of their diet made up of carbohydrates; complex and simple. Complex carbohydrates are found in foods such as; Spaghetti, Potatoes, Lasagna, cereals and other grain products. Simple carbohydrates are found in; fruits, milk, honey and sugar. This increase in muscle glycogen allows endurance athletes to perform for longer, if however, the high % carbohydrate diet continues and training decreases and the body doesn’t need to store the muscle glycogen it does still unfortunately store it as fat. The golden rule is always energy in must balance with energy out… So be wise with the energy content of your meals and balance it with the energy expenditure of your day.

This Week’s Ride
This Saturday you can chose your treat;

Triathlon Training with Troy – meet at Bellbowrie pool at 6am bring your Triathlon gear… If you want to do just Swim training, Cycle training or Run training come along and Troy will tailor a session for you. $4.40 pool entry, $5 coaching, $4 very nice coffee.

Cycling with Jay – meet at Taylor Cycles at 6am.

Last weekend there was 2 cyclists who thought they would do some sneaky mountain work in preparation for the winter climbing rides. Thankfully for the rest of us one of them had a camera… I really hope this footage works…Click here

Tour of Hope & Grand Tour of Hope
Registrations are open for both the Tour of Hope and Grand Tour of Hope. If you are wanting to ride in the Grand Tour then register earlier rather than later as there is only 30 spots available and they are filling fast. It is $500 registration plus a $1000 buy in figure. The registration goes towards running costs whilst the $1000 goes directly to Droplets in a Stream and the valuable work they do in Kenya and Uganda. For those wanting to ride the 1 day rides on June 2nd; don’t just see it as a chance to ride your bike. Take the opportunity to tell your work mates, friends, and family about the mission work that happens as a direct result of the money YOU raise. We have every material possession we could ask for in the Western world, yet there are those in third world countries that don’t. So lets help them out by raising as much money as we can individually and then pool it all together and send it to Africa…

Triathlon news
We will just miss out on being able to purchase Triathlon suits prior to Kingscliff Tri, but not long after that we will have for purchase Tour of Hope Triathlon suits. If you are ready to purchase a new suit please hold off for ours to come in as all money raised off the suits goes directly to Droplets in a Stream, as does all our clothing.

Metabolic rate…

We have looked at the importance of training with an understanding of your Heart Rate, so it is only fair to balance the equation by looking at nutrition. When we exercise we need energy to function; one source of energy production is via our Aerobic and Anaerobic systems, the second source of energy production comes through the food we eat. We each have a Metabolic Rate; different for every person, but critical for every person to understand. Your Metabolism helps break down the food you eat into usable energy, fat storage and waste. Someone with a good Metabolism will break down food efficiently and quicker than someone with a slower Metabolism, producing more usable energy sources and less fat storage.

The relevance of all this is simple, if your metabolism is good then nutrition for long distance events is different from someone who’s metabolism is slower. Therefore you will need to eat higher energy foods more often as your body is breaking them down quicker to use for energy production during your event / training. At the other end of the scale; someone with a slower Metabolism needs to watch the amount of high energy foods they eat in comparison to their training output as their Metabolism will store unused energy from food as fat. In the next addition of Tour of Hope eNews we will look at what foods are more beneficial for endurance performance and what foods we could politely say no too when offered.

Cameron Singer obviously has a good Metabolism by the looks of this shot…

Change is Coming
Over the next few weeks this news letter will move onto the Tour of Hope website which will enable anyone access to view our training times and feel free to join us as we all strive to improve our fitness and stay connected. Each Sunday you will be able to go to www.tourofhope.com.au and click on the ‘blog’ link and find our weekly information. For the next few weeks you will still get a reminder email which will direct you to the website, after that you are on you own…

Tour of Hope
Registrations are now open! Go to www.tourofhope.com.au and follow the links. Remember there is only 30 places available for the Grand Tour of Hope (5 day tour ride finishing alongside the Tour of Hope day rides) and last year places filled within 2 weeks of registrations opening. All the details on all rides are available on the web site so go check it out. Please remember that we are raising money for Droplets in a stream which supports orphaned children in Africa. These rides allows us to generate much needed money so that basic infrastructure can be built at the orphanages. To date we have supported the building of toilet blocks, water tower, solar lighting and general maintenance. We hope that each rider catches the vision of raising as much money as possible for these kids and their futures.

Triathlon News
There is only 3 weeks to go until Kingscliff Triathlon!!! We had a great training session on Saturday morning at Bellbowrie pool with Troy setting up a tough little course for us to negotiate. So tough in fact I may have seen my breakfast twice that morning (there is photo evidence but seeing as though I’m the author I can’t see it making an appearance in the eNews…). Troy offers some great coaching session from Bellbowrie pool every second Saturday from 6am until 7.30am – $5.

There have been some changes to a few of the teams with some athletes having to pull out due to injury and family commitments. Below is the latest list of registered athletes, teams and individuals that will be competing.
Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4
Cyclist – Pat H Rob B Teresa M Brendan M
Runner – Mark P Michael T Teressa’s friend Lee N
Individual – Ben I, Jason B, Suzette G

In 2 weeks Bribie Island hosts their second race at 1km swim, 30km cycle and 8km run. The exciting news is the Thompson boys have entered a 3 generation team with Ian’s dad doing the swim leg, Ian doing the cycle and Ian’s son Michael doing the run. As a dad I think that is just awesome!!! Good luck Thomo’s… For our other Tour of Hope Athletes competing at that event I wish you all the best.

2012 Grand tour of Hope
The route for this years Grand Tour of Hope is complete and as I drove it last week I couldn’t help but get excited. The climbs are challenging, the distances are achievable, the roads are acceptable but the views are unbelievable. Registrations will open very soon and my advice is; ‘get in early to secure your place’ as this ride is looking like one to remember. We will be asking for a registration fee plus a buy in fee; encouraging all the riders to catch the Tour of Hope vision – “enjoying riding & raising money to support orphaned children in Kenya and Uganda”. So please support both this beautiful ride & the charity. These are some photos of day 3 from Mt Barney to Mt Tambourine.

his Weekend’s Ride
This Saturday is one for the Triathletes (both team competitors and individuals). We will have the privilege of being trained by Troy Thexton this Saturday, if you are doing the swim leg, cycle leg, or run leg of a team, or you are an individual competitor, come along as Troy will structure the training session to cater for everyone. Please bring money for pool entry ($5), to pay Troy ($5) and if you are keen for a very nice coffee after training ($4). Having been trained by Troy in previous seasons I am very excited about this opportunity, if you are racing at Kingscliff, Bribie Island, or Mooloolaba then this is a must session for you.

Due to the vision weekend at Kenmore Baptist Church there will be no long ride this Saturday morning. If you aren’t into Triathlons but want a hard cycling session then please feel free to join us at Bellbowrie pool (you will only need $5 to pay Troy, plus coffee money…)

Triathlon News
Kingscliff Olympic distance Triathlon (race 3 of the Tour of Hope Triathlon session) is only 4 weeks away so if you haven’t begun preparations yet then perhaps we need to see you at a training session this week… If you haven’t secured your accommodation yet you may want to get onto that as places are hard to find in and around Kingscliff. Below are the teams as they currently are with the RED person as the team captain. We are still looking for a runner for team 2 and a female swimmer for team 3. If you know of someone that could fill these spots please email me at beninnes74@yahoo.com.au

Q. When should I arrive for my event?
A. Please ensure you visit the Registration Tent to confirm your presence and pick up your wrist band 30 minutes prior to the start time of your event. See more info for “On the Day“.

Q. Can I register on the day?
A. We won’t turn anyone back if they turn up suitably prepared and fill in an entry form available at the event, and pay cash on the day, but it would really help if you register online beforehand!

Q. Can I request a refund?
A. Unfortunately entry fees are non-refundable

Q. What happens if it rains?
A. The event will proceed in the rain and all riders should be prepared for all possible conditions. However if a severe electric storm occurs it may be cancelled and re-scheduled.

Q. Is it safe?
A. Riding on roads always includes an element of risk. We have chosen regular bike paths and roads for each of the routes. However it is your responsibility to obey all road rules and ride sensibly. Take sufficient food and water with you and follow instructions and recommendations.

Q. Is the event insured?
A. You will require your own personal accident / health insurance.

Q. What happens if I break down or am unable to continue riding?
A. There is a recovery vehicle that will follow the 50km and 130km rides. It does not provide full mechanical servicing, but may be able to assist with minor adjustments and collection of withdrawn participants. You are encouraged to service your bike before participating.

Q. Can I leave my belongings at Rocks River Park?
A. There will be a point to leave sealed bags of belongings at the Start. However notwithstanding that all care will be taken, we do not accept responsibility for any losses or damages.

Q. What can I win?
A. This is NOT a race, but a ride for charity. You will gain the opportunity to participate with other riders in raising money for a worthy cause. There will, however, be prizes to be won at the recovery event.

Q. What pace will we be expected to ride on the 50km or 130km ride? / Can I ride at my own pace on the 50km or 130km ride?
A. We will encourage people to ride in groups of similar capability. This increases safety, and also aids in navigation. We expect the faster groups will ride at an average of 33kph+, the slower groups averaging 20kph-ish, and various groups in between. On the Lakes 50k ride, speed and fitness is not so much of an issue since a slow or tired rider can simply turn back and go the way they came. For riders in the Overland 130k ride, we suggest that those who cannot average 24k/hr should turn back at the Greenbank rest-stop, and make it an 80k ride.

Q. How will riders know the route? Will there be signs or marshals along the route?
A. Maps of the route are provided on our website. The 10km, 50km and 130km routes will be fully signposted. We also recommend that riders 1) study the maps provided to be familiar with the course.

Q. How will the groups work?
A. The 50km and 130km rides will start in groups. The groups are pretty informal. We’ll simply ask people to self organize at the start and suggest that people stay in groups as much as possible rather than ride on their own. We’ll ask experienced / competitive riders who want to go fast to move to the front, and people who are less experienced or who intend to ride slowly to move to the rear and then ‘release’ people onto the course in groups of 10-12 each minute or so. This allows friends to ride together if they wish. While we hope most people will stay in their groups, it is likely that some will find their group too fast or slow and either push ahead or drop back. So we cannot guarantee that anyone who starts in a group will be accompanied by that group throughout the ride. Therefore all riders should be able to be self sufficient (with navigation, food, drink, spare tubes, tools etc) and anyone under 16 should be supervised by an accompanying adult.

Funds raised from the Tour of Hope events go to various community and transformation projects throughout under-privileged areas of the world. Funds from the 2011 event were invested predominantly in the projects listed here.

Mama Wilfreda’s Childrens Home (Kisumu – Kenya).
Up to 120 children are housed and supported in this relatively serene rural corner of South-Western Kenya. The children, usually discovered as orphans wandering the slums (right) or streets, are housed, fed and nurtured on the property of our partners the Nyameche family. The ongoing vision for this project is immense, with a dream to make it a place where future nation-builders are educated and trained through an onsite school and vocational training college. A medical center and other community hubs are also planned for the site.

In September 2011, Team: Tour of Hope visited the home to oversee the projects funded by donors and riders of the 2011 event. Having previously helped provide the home with a water bore, solar pump, tank & tower, it was time to provide hygiene through proper shower and toilet blocks. More solar power was added to provide life-changing lighting for the dormitories, and a powerful generator donated for the other electrical needs.
Most of the children had never seen a sanitary toilet or shower, and so that combined with clean running water means the children can grow up with their primary need for health met.

With the building going on, it was also time for their first exposure to dental care. A group of local and international dentists were brought in to treat and record the children’s dental needs, as well as train them in oral hygiene. For some, it was a scary experience having teeth pulled or treated, but without treatment they faced prolonged pain and infection in a land where health care is only for the wealthy few.
Other guys and girls from the team spent their days teaching dances and games to the children at Mama Wilfreda’s Home and surrounding schools. During these visits, they spent time with the teachers learning about student needs and numbers, as well as assessing current and future development projects. By assessing conditions and needs, and getting a glimpse of normal school life for the children they gained insight into how Droplets in a Stream (DIAS) can help support the local community, and their growing needs for education. The team were also able to present each school with a gift from Australia, leaving both students and team with a desire to continue their connection.

In 2012 we plan to continue the development of the Children’s home by adding more facilities and housing. To see more images and learn more about the vision of Mama Wilfreda’s Childrens Home, visit the DIAS website.

As the young men present the team with viable business plans, funds are injected into some of their ventures to purchase equipment or stock in the hope of providing encouragement, incentive, and a means of providing self-employment in an area where the few who do work normally earn no more than $1 per day.
Located in the slums of Kampala, our partner Haggai Mwesige is a community leader who dreams of giving people a chance at life. With funds from the Tour of Hope and some other donors, he has almost completed a building to be used for a range of community, education and transformational activities. It had to be high though, because in the wetter months the whole area is inundated with up to a metre of water within minutes, and it happens every couple of days!

Distribution of funds generated by the 2011 Tour of Hope are being predominantly managed by Droplets in a Stream (DIAS), a registered charity established to bring support and transformation to third-world communities. The remainder of funds raised are managed by Kenmore Baptist Church, who organise the Tour of Hope, utilising the same criteria for allocation of funds as DIAS. All projects supported by Tour of Hope funds are located in under-privileged communities throughout the world, with the money used for community development, infrastructure, buildings or other tangible resources such as equipment.
