Funds raised from the Tour of Hope events go to various community and transformation projects throughout under-privileged areas of the world. Funds from the 2011 event were invested predominantly in the projects listed here.

Mama Wilfreda’s Childrens Home (Kisumu – Kenya).
Up to 120 children are housed and supported in this relatively serene rural corner of South-Western Kenya. The children, usually discovered as orphans wandering the slums (right) or streets, are housed, fed and nurtured on the property of our partners the Nyameche family. The ongoing vision for this project is immense, with a dream to make it a place where future nation-builders are educated and trained through an onsite school and vocational training college. A medical center and other community hubs are also planned for the site.

In September 2011, Team: Tour of Hope visited the home to oversee the projects funded by donors and riders of the 2011 event. Having previously helped provide the home with a water bore, solar pump, tank & tower, it was time to provide hygiene through proper shower and toilet blocks. More solar power was added to provide life-changing lighting for the dormitories, and a powerful generator donated for the other electrical needs.

Most of the children had never seen a sanitary toilet or shower, and so that combined with clean running water means the children can grow up with their primary need for health met.

With the building going on, it was also time for their first exposure to dental care. A group of local and international dentists were brought in to treat and record the children’s dental needs, as well as train them in oral hygiene. For some, it was a scary experience having teeth pulled or treated, but without treatment they faced prolonged pain and infection in a land where health care is only for the wealthy few.

Other guys and girls from the team spent their days teaching dances and games to the children at Mama Wilfreda’s Home and surrounding schools. During these visits, they spent time with the teachers learning about student needs and numbers, as well as assessing current and future development projects. By assessing conditions and needs, and getting a glimpse of normal school life for the children they gained insight into how Droplets in a Stream (DIAS) can help support the local community, and their growing needs for education. The team were also able to present each school with a gift from Australia, leaving both students and team with a desire to continue their connection.

In 2012 we plan to continue the development of the Children’s home by adding more facilities and housing. To see more images and learn more about the vision of Mama Wilfreda’s Childrens Home, visit the DIAS website.

Together We Can (Kibira – Kenya)
Known to us as the “Waterboys”, this cooperative group of entrepreneurial young men live and work in Kibira, in the largest slum in Africa (1.2 million people).

As the young men present the team with viable business plans, funds are injected into some of their ventures to purchase equipment or stock in the hope of providing encouragement, incentive, and a means of providing self-employment in an area where the few who do work normally earn no more than $1 per day.

Multi-Purpose Facility (Kampala – Uganda)
Located in the slums of Kampala, our partner Haggai Mwesige is a community leader who dreams of giving people a chance at life. With funds from the Tour of Hope and some other donors, he has almost completed a building to be used for a range of community, education and transformational activities. It had to be high though, because in the wetter months the whole area is inundated with up to a metre of water within minutes, and it happens every couple of days!

Distribution of funds generated by the 2011 Tour of Hope are being predominantly managed by Droplets in a Stream (DIAS), a registered charity established to bring support and transformation to third-world communities. The remainder of funds raised are managed by Kenmore Baptist Church, who organise the Tour of Hope, utilising the same criteria for allocation of funds as DIAS. All projects supported by Tour of Hope funds are located in under-privileged communities throughout the world, with the money used for community development, infrastructure, buildings or other tangible resources such as equipment.
